Fangs of Frustration. Born amidst the chaos of a crumbling Qing dynasty and the dismantling of the Confucian order, Bai Lang grapples for his place in a world in constant flux. Denied the traditional path of a Confucian scholar, he's captivated by thrilling stories of righteous bandits and champions of the common people. This fascination draws him to military service during Sun Yat-sen's revolution, but eventually compels him to become a formidable bandit himself known as the White Wolf. In the lawless plains of North China, Bai Lang chases an idealized past, a golden age that may have never been and certainly cannot coexist with the birth pangs of a modern China.

About the Books

Harvest of Hunger is the first book in a trilogy recounting the saga of four generations of an American family serving as missionaries and cultural ambassadors in China in the 19th and 20th centuries. Though a certain amount of literary license has been used in developing the narratives, they do track closely actual historical events and experiences of actual people. This book takes up the story of the character, Ross Sutherland, who was the second generation of his family to live and work in China, as he and his family address the challenges of the North China famine of 1920-21.

Fortune’s Retrieval picks up the saga of the third generation.  In midst of chaos and conflict, the Southerland missionary family in China faces their greatest test of survival. As the snowballing clashes between the Japanese and the Nationalist Chinese government in Nanking threaten to consume the land, the courageous members of the second and third generation find themselves trapped in the heart of the storm.
In the 1930s and 40s, when others fled the danger, the Southerlands made a bold choice: to remain in China and continue their missionary work. But their decision comes with a heavy price. Following the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941, they were suddenly branded as enemy nationals by the ruthless Japanese occupation authorities.

Pursuing Shadows is the third and final chapter in the chronicles of the Sutherland family in China. In Pursuing Shadows,Lawson Sutherland embarks on a gripping journey that defies time and borders. Despite his family's absence from China for four decades, a relentless longing compels him to return to the land where his roots were planted, where his grandfather's story began, and where his father dedicated his life as an educational missionary.
Driven by an insatiable desire to unravel the mysteries of his family's history and legacy, Lawson delves into the depths of a forgotten past. But little does he know that his quest for truth will unleash a chain of events that will forever alter his future.
